Compulsive gaming is already considered a psychological disorder. While this condition used to be related to only gambling, let me introduce you to the new faces of modern-day addiction. The growing number of individuals suffering from computer game addiction and video game addiction can be puzzling for many people. What they don’t realize is that any form of addiction roots from things that used to be harmless. Just like in gambling, virtual games bring a sense of fun, thrill and excitement when played, these feelings actually make the game more appealing and engaging and addictive. While adult players are expected to be responsible and maintain control in their gaming habits, they are also vulnerable to this form of addiction. Just imagine whatever form of control reigns among younger players. Children, particularly those of school ages, are most likely to succumb to the disorder for they can easily and freely access the cause.
In the past, there were no problems regarding addiction when it comes to video or computer games. Thanks to the crude graphics and self-limiting features, older versions of games eventually become repetitive and eventually boring to play. However, the integration of more complex game mechanics and stories, as in war games and other strategy games, managed to make video and computer games more challenging and appealing to its players. Thanks to the advancements in computer graphics, more realistic pictures and virtual roles have existed in the realms of such games, providing everybody a great chance to take a breather or take a break from the stresses and pressures that real life entails. This way, playing video and computer games can be considered as therapeutic.
What make the game destructive are the manifestations of addictive behaviors while playing the game. Since, playing these games bring out a sense of good feeling, as in deep sense of satisfaction to escaping the stresses and problems of real-life roles. To some people, playing the game brings out the same effects that narcotics bring. This is what actually makes the game addictive. Similar to substance abuse, computer game addiction and video game addiction starts from a compulsive behavior disorder. This is shown by the constant need to play the game, feeling irritable when prevented from doing the act of playing and persistence in having to play even when fully aware of the adverse consequences that the act may bring.
No one is too young or too old not to be vulnerable to video and computer game addiction. Since these games are freely and easily accessible to all, this makes it even more difficult to control and handle. As a parent, you can be at a proactive stand by studying your children’s behavior towards playing these games. If you observe the mentioned behaviors relating to gaming addiction, immediately consult a professional help to determine the severity of the condition. The seriousness of video game addiction and computer game addiction has gone unnoticed. It managed to sneak from a good thing that turns out bad due to abuse and bad usage. The arguments on whether video or computer addiction is considered a mental disorder are still under debate. Whatever these medical experts may have concluded from this new face of modern-day addiction, one thing will be clear. Two people I know are seriously affected - one sits 18 hours a day and the other sits 14 hours a day. Neither of them work. One can contact family members only through the instant messaging system of the game - they won't talk on the phone and control their relative in this way - "play or you can't see us."
