“Aromatherapy” is now becoming a very popular type of alternative treatment. For a common person it is mostly associated with stress relief. The oil extracted from a herb or a plant is used in aromatherapy. Some oils are common and are easily available over the counter and can be used without any expert guidance. Some treatments require a combination of various oils. These should be done only by an expert as they would know which oils can be combined and what should be the ratio in which it is to be mixed.
Given below are a list of the common essential oils and its uses.
Eucalyptus, Clove, Basil, Sandalwood, Rose, and Lavender are some of the commonly available and know essential oils. These oils are used in the treatment of headaches, skin infections, stress, muscle pain, insomnia to name a few. These are available easily and are also known for their medicinal properties since ages. They can be used in the form of diffusion, inhalation, and application. These are also said to be anti-inflammator and antiseptic in nature.
Black Pepper is said to be useful in treating cold, digestion muscle pain, sinus etc.
Ginger is said to aid digestion, treat cold and flu.
Fennel is said to be useful for aiding digestion.
Jasmine is used for relieving stress and clam the nerves. Tea made from Jasmine is said to aid in digestion and also soothes the nerves. Drops of Jasmine oil can be added to the bath for a relaxation.
Lemon is used for nausea, constipation.
Orange is said to relive constipation and stress. It is also used in various skin treatments. It also helps reduce muscle pain.
Cedar wood is said to give stress relief and also aids is treating respiratory problems. It is also said to cure urinary tract infections but this should only be taken after taking the expert advice.
Chamomile is commonly available flower. The oils extracted from this are not only useful in stress relief but also treats head ache due to its analgesic properties. Tea is also made from it and has soothing properties. Chamomile was considered as the herb of all ills by the Egyptians.
Peppermint another common and a popular product has many healing properties. It is used is various form in many commercial products as well. The most common being a mouth freshener. It has cooling properties and aids in the healing of headaches. It is also used a mood elevator.
Cardamom oil helps in aiding digestion.
Tea Tree oil is used in skin and hair treatments. It also helps in healing of cold sores, burns, and muscle pains.
Rosemary is said to have properties that not relieves of pain, cold and cough but can also improve memory.
Cypress is said to be used in the treatment of asthma, bronchitis, and rheumatism.
Lemongrass is used for reducing stress and also aids in increasing the appetite.
Ylang Ylang is popular oil which is used in many beauty products especially related to hair. It is also said to have aphrodisiac properties though it is commonly used for treating tooth ache and nausea.
While most of essential oils can be used directly on the skin and would have no side effects caution should be maintained while they are being used by pregnant women. Also some products are very strong and can cause irritation if applied directly on the skin. Overuse of products can also lead to problem instead of cure. It is always safe to use the products after taking expert guidance.
